SANTA LUCIA WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL TEAM

Forget NBA!

We have provided financial support to these brave boys who compete in wheelchair basketball. We met with the Director of the Santa Lucia Foundation, one of the largest rehabilitation and research centres in Italy, which no longer has the financial resources to provide financial support for sports activities and therefore gave the players, free of charge, the (amateur) wheelchair basketball club (granting them free use of the facility for this year) and all sports equipment. We then met the player/President of the club Mohamed Sanna and the whole team. Great enthusiasm and passion, great to see how they try to defy and overcome their disabilities through sport. Several young people have joined them as part of their rehabilitation therapy and they have signed up for the Premier League with the funds they raised, but they needed and need support for their activities. The main cost is travel and medical assistance (they always play in other regions, including Sardinia and Sicily, mobilising about 20 people, with at least 12 of them in wheelchairs). In previous years, the Foundation supported them with an annual budget which this year has been cut to the bone (by as much as 50%). Our charity has therefore decided to make an important contribution to the up-keep of this beautiful sporting activity and to the rehabilitation of the young people involved.
